Abstract

Multidirectional forging (MDF) is an effective severe plastic deformation method that provides grain refinement and improves the mechanical strength of metallic materials. In this study, the microstructural homogeneity was improved in the MDF-treated Al-Mg alloy due to coarse particles of the β(Al3Mg2)-phase precipitated during intermediate heterogenization annealing. The β-phase stimulated recrystallization due to a particle stimulated nucleation mechanism, improved the grain refinement effect during MDF that increased the yield strength of the alloy.
