Abstract
This work investigates the grain-growth behaviourof powder compact during Stage 1 sintering (<90{%} theoreticaldensity). It is widely accepted that grain size is an important statevariable in the constitutive modelling in material sintering. However, itis noted that all the existing grain-growth laws proposed in theliterature do not incorporate the effect of externally applied stressindependently. In this work, a grain-growth law with externally appliedstress as a variable was proposed. Alumina powders were forge-sinteredat different applied stresses to examine the proposed grain-growthrelationship. The proposed grain-growth law was then applied to modelthe grain-growth process on the sinter forging of tool steel. It isshown that the present proposed grain-growth law provides a gooddescription on the experimental results.
