Abstract

The Li4SiO4 tritium breeding pebbles will be filled in the blanket and used for 2 years or more at high temperatures, which would increase the grain size and affect tritium release. Hence, grain sizes of the Li4SiO4 pebbles fabricated by agar method were investigated, and two kinds of different silicon sources (crystal and amorphous SiO2) with different particle sizes were used. The particle size of SiO2 could affect grain size and density of the Li4SiO4 pebble. And the isothermal sintering was carried out to study the grain growth kinetics of Li4SiO4. The grain growth exponent (n) and the activation energy (Q) were calculated by the phenomenological kinetic equation. The calculated n values were 4.10, 3.98, 3.34 and 2.96, and corresponding Q values were 152.15, 147.99, 125.54 and 110.58kJ/mol, respectively. At the higher sintering temperatures (950 and 1000°C), the grain growth of Li4SiO4 was controlled by vapor transport.
