Abstract

(Sm,Eu,Gd)Ba 2Cu 3O 7− x (SEG123) superconductors were synthesized by the melt process in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. We could grow a relatively large grain SEG123 crystal by using a MgO (100) seed. Microstructural investigations revealed that the ratio of Sm:Eu:Gd in the 123 matrix was 1:1:1 and the same as the starting composition, indicating that mixing of three different rare earth elements is very uniform. The melt-processed SEG123 system showed an onset T c of 94 K and a sharp transition, which is almost comparable to the T c of a single rare earth element 123.
