Abstract

Transmission electron microscopy has been used to characterize the microstructure of a titanium diboride sample. Specimen preparation involved conventional ion beam thinning which allowed the main features of the microstructure to be identified. Porosity was found to be largely, but not exclusively, associated with grain boundaries. Some microareas rich in tramp additions (of Fe and W) have been identified.The main substructural feature found was a regular array of low angle(polygon) boundaries with an average misorientation angle of 0.5 degrees. Many of the high angle boundaries studied exhibited periodic arrays of grain boundary dislocations.
