Abstract

The significance of the atomic structure of grain boundaries in silver for the equilibrium boundary segregation of oxygen was investigated by means of the formation of water vapour bubbles at grain boundaries in AgO solid solutions annealed in H 2. Low energy boundaries exhibited numerous small water vapour bubbles, whereas in high energy boundaries a few large size voids were formed, suggesting that oxygen segregates preferentially at high energy boundaries.
