A weak federal response to dozens of deaths caused by entrapment in grain bins heightens the need to strengthen worker safety laws, said 2 Democratic leaders of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Chairman Sen Tom Harkin (D, Iowa) and Sen Bob Casey (D, Pa), chairman of the Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety, announced on March 29 that they had signed on as original cosponsors of the Protecting America's Workers Act bill, introduced March 22. The bill would amend and update the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.
