Abstract

Abstract Grafting of norbornene diacid anhydride (NA) onto fluoroelastomer (FPM) has been studied using a Brabender Plasticorder in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The concentrations of NA and DCP were varied from 0 to 10.0 wt% and from 0.1 to 1.0 wt% respectively. The grafting quantities and crosslinking degree (gel content) of the grafting FPM (FPM-g-NA) were determined by acetone extraction and a back-titration procedure. The results showed that maximum NA grafting can be reached 5.5 wt% by using a relatively low peroxide concentration (0.4 wt%) and NA content (10 wt%). The characteristic groups of norbornene diacid anhydride in the grafted products were measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal property of the FPM-g-NA was studied. The results showed that norbornene diacid anhydride had grafted onto fluoroelastomer.
