Abstract

Graft copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto polyamide film by the mutual method in aqueous medium in air has been studied. The percentage of grafting (Pg) has been determined as a function of: (i) total dose, (ii) monomer concentration and (iii) amount of water. Several grafting experiments were conducted in a water–alcohol mixed solvent and effect of alcohols of different chain lengths on Pg has been studied. All the alcohols used except MeOH, decreased Pg. The graft copolymers were characterized by IR spectroscopic and thermogravimetric analysis. A plausible mechanism is suggested to explain the results.
