Abstract
The study of orthographic variants as exemplified by the Benedictines of St. Jerome in vol. XIII of their critical edition of the Vulgate is of particular interest to Hispanists for the phonetic traits suggested by MSS written hispane and hispanissime , and of general interest because it challenges the connotation of certain graphs considered by editors of early Romance texts as learned and opens up the problem of the interpretation of Latin abbreviations in vernacular context.
