Abstract

Advocates for educational reform have focused on revising the instructional delivery system, arguing for more personalized, student-centered programs designed with the adult learner in mind. This article discusses the cohort approach tq graduate studies, defined as progams of study wherein groups of individuals work collaboratively and individually toward common personal and professional goals, and outlines components of successful cohort development. In addition, the article reviews a functioning doctoral cohort in Early Childhood Education and discusses its advantages and disadvantages from the perspective of both student and faculty. Finally, directions for future research are presented.
