Abstract
This randomised controlled trial examined GMHWs’ case management of depressed primary care patients. The authors contacted 1,073 patients aged between 18 and 65 who had moderate to severe depression and had failed to respond to an eight-week period of antidepressant treatment. Of these, 78 were eligible and 62 consented to participate. They were randomised to either their usual treatment from their GP or their usual GP treatment and case management from GMHWs. All patients received a prescription for an alternative antidepressant within a week of their baseline assessment.
