Abstract
This, the 45th annual report on graduate medical education in the United States, analyzes the distribution and performance of approved graduate training programs for the academic year 1971-1972. Except as otherwise specified, the data reported were obtained from hospitals as of Sept 1, 1971, and therefore are now one year old. Most of the tables contain a column stating the number of positions that will be offered for the academic year 1973-1974. This report also appears in the 1972-1973Directory of Approved Internships and Residencies, which book contains detailed lists of approved internships and residencies. In addition, theDirectorycontains a consolidated list of hospitals to indicate all of the graduate training programs carried on in such institutions, the "Essentials of Approved Internship," "Essentials of Approved Residencies," information on the National Intern and Resident Matching Program (NIRMP), the requirements of Approved American Specialty Boards, and an excerpt on medical licensure
