Abstract

Guidelines for training in geriatric dentistry for graduate dental programs remain to be established. In spite of this many postdoctoral programs in general dentistry and the dental specialties include a variety of clinical, research, and didactic activities pertinent to dental care for older adults in their curricula. A few advanced dental programs have been established which focus particularly on this field. Programs at The University of Rochester/Eastman Dental Center provide training to residents/students in General Practice Residencies and an Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry and also to those in a second year program for education in special care dentistry which emphasizes geriatrics. The development and current activities in the Rochester programs are described. It is anticipated that descriptions of graduate programs currently in place may be helpful in establishing guidelines for teaching in geriatric dentistry at this level.
