Abstract

The effect of prestorage grading of potatoes on the quality of potatoes delivered to a packing company was determined in a farm-scale study. The percentage of potatoes classified as Canada #1, with or without prestorage grading, was 76.8 and 70.0, respectively. Potatoes not meeting the standards for shape and size were removed by prestorage grading; whereas, those having severe mechanical injury were not. A survey of eight years of a packing company records indicated that 66.1% of the potatoes delivered to the company met Canada #1 standards.
