Abstract

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) has significantly improved in efficiency compared to the last H264/AVC. HEVC finds the best intra prediction mode with the least rate distortion (RD) cost by iterating all over the possible depth level and prediction modes which causes a dramatic increase in computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a fast CU size decision and mode decision algorithm for intra prediction in HEVC based on gradient information of video images. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the computational complexity of the current HM13.0 to about 37% in encoding time with negligible loss of coding efficiency.
