Abstract

Today, smart or sustainable cities are not only a global trend but a necessity, the main goal of which is to provide the population with quality living conditions and the unhindered satisfaction and management of all needs and activities. On the other hand, smart cities should encourage both economic development and environmental protection. The implementation of the concept of smart cities should include all parts of the urban area as well as all actors in the overall development of the local community. The concept of a smart city should be subordinate to and in the service of all citizens. The future of cities is connected to new technologies, which should be connected to existing infrastructure to solve various issues. In order to become sustainable, the city needs to create a strong and functional infrastructure that implements new technology into the existing structure. The success of smart city development depends to a large extent on spatial policies and the city government, which is responsible for the coordination of development projects. The paper analyzed the possibility and advantages of applying the "smart city concept" as well as its elements, as well as the possibilities and limitations of implementing the concept in the territory of the City of Banja Luka.
