Abstract

With increasing population, the demand for power is increasing at an exponential rate. Power theft, unpaid bills, poor usage of energy leave the energy market crippled. The rise in use of electronics good due to their cheap cost has distorted power quality. Hence to increase energy consumption efficiency, monitor power quality, closely monitor the energy usage pattern of customers many utilities have employed smart energy meters. The primary goal is to provide a bi — directional communication between customer and the utility. Considering the juvenile stage of employing smart energy meters in India, this paper presents a Global Packet for Radio Service (GPRS) based smart energy meter with in home display. This meter can take real time voltage, current, and power factor readings. The meter calculate the energy consumed and is stored in cloud using GPRS. Graphical programming of LabVIEW is used to develop the In Home Display (IHD). The IHD functions as home energy management system successfully displaying the energy demand curve, harmonic content, load schedule, and current price of energy usage. In addition, a hypothetical Time Of Use (TOU) pricing is developed and analyze the results. Also, a methodology of intelligent scheduling of load appliances in correspondence to TOU have been developed.
