Abstract

The publication of the first edition of Gower's Principles of Modern Company Law in 1954 has been recognized as a milestone in the development of company law textbooks. It has been described as 'a blueprint for curriculum reform',' and acknowledged for its contribution to the development of company law as an academic subject.2 In an area of study previously dominated by practitioners' texts,3 Gower sought to present a work which would primarily be of use to students, would be written in a lucid and easily understandable style, and would 'emphasize the principles of common law and equity on which this branch of the law is still based, rather than the statutory provisions which supplement and amend them in detail'.4
