Government and State Agencies: Who Administrates Healthcare on Federal and State Levels?

Abstract

Healthcare in the United States is offered by a multitude of unique agencies. Administration of the many healthcare programs available to Americans is extremely complex and involves regulation at the state and federal level. Although each level of the government has specific and separate responsibilities, there is significant interplay and interaction during the administration of healthcare. In addition, the separation of responsibilities and level of interplay vary significantly between the different forms of healthcare available in the United States. This chapter will identify many of the key players at both the state and federal level in healthcare administration, outline the responsibilities of each government level with regards to regulating specific healthcare programs, and highlight the significant interplay between state and federal governments during healthcare administration.
