Abstract

It Is widely acknowledged that my society plagued by corruption is a nation in distress. The article observes that Nigeria is unfortunately in such a situation as virtually all spheres of its public life is affected by the vice. The article rakes pertinent issues about the role of a government in corruption in Nigeria and concludes that government has, in fact, aided and abetted (through inaction) rather than try to check corruption. A brief characterization of various regimes and their efforts or otherwise to curb the menace is enunciated with more emphasis on the period between 1986 and 1993 when the situation seemed to worsen. A general impression of the factors which engenders corruption and corrupt practices is identified while a critique of official means of dealing with corruption is also attempted.
