Abstract

La Musee de la Civilisation in Quebec City played the role of instigator and host to the first national exhibition devoted to Quebecois popular music. Entitled Je vous entends chanter (I Hear You Singing), the exhibition was inaugurated just a few weeks before the Quebec sovereignty referendum in the fall of 1995. It was closed a year later, but due to its unprecedented success with the public as well as the critics, the exhibition was reopened in March 1997, this time in the Just For Laughs Museum in Montreal, where it also attracted large crowds for more than a year.2
