Abstract

Political Science can be instructed to college students using examples from sports. Newspaper articles that report on sports, players, and other related information act as a useful framework to study and teach political participation and process. Sport articles also provide valuable insight as a methodological resource to educate college students on general American Political Process/Political Science curriculum and citizenship. Examples of real-world discourse on political participation and decision-making can be transformed from the sports page (e.g. contracts, lock-out, personal conduct, win/loss) to lectures on political science (e.g. participation, first amendment, ideology, campaign). Feedback indicates that most students enjoy sports examples as a method to learn political concepts. This paper seeks to affirm politics is not only a subject in which sports articles can be used as a tool in instructing on the subject of political science, but that sports is political.
