Abstract

In Reply. —Syndromes are both the joy and bane of medicine. The point I was attempting to make is that Goldenhar's and Wildervanck's syndromes are the same condition, but with variations in anatomical expression. Goldenhar's syndrome is oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia, and Wildervanck's syndrome is cervico-oculo-acoustic dysplasia. It is immediately apparent that they are, if not identical, at least related. I missed Dr Baum's article on Goldenhar's syndrome 1 because I had only made a literature search for Wildervanck's syndrome. I reviewed his article, and it was excellent. It contains 50 references and 13 cases of his own. Two of his patients, incidentally, had Duane's syndrome, which supposedly is more commonly associated with Wildervanck's syndrome.
