Abstract

There's an intense sweetness to the opening minutes of Terrence Malick's Badlands. Kit Carruthers (Martin Sheen) woos Holly Sargis (Sissy Spacek) as she twirls a baton on her father's front lawn. The two quickly become inseparable. He's “from the wrong side of the tracks, so called” and dresses like James Dean; she's a lonely outsider with a penchant for puff sleeves and truly tiny shorts. Kit and Holly find shelter and solace in each other's company in scenes saturated with Malick's signature golden light.
