Abstract

Only two loach species – Cobitis taenia and Misgurnus fossilis – have been known until in Lithuania. On 21 August, 2002 a new species of another loach genus, golden loach (Sabanejewia Aurata), was discovered. All these fish individuals were caught in the Venta River basin, one of them being caught in the Venta River near the Kuodžiai mill and three others – in the Serksnė River mouth. The fish were caught with electrofishing equipment and a fish dredge. The golden loach range covers fresh waters of the Baltic, Aegean, Black, Azov, Caspian and Aral Sea basins. Closest to Lithuania this fish has been first recorded quite recently in Poland, the Odra River basin. In 1994, a new subspecies of the Baltic Sea basin (Witkowski 1994) was identified.
