Abstract
This Review Of Robert And Janis Henderson’s Living with Jung: “Enterviews” with Jungian Analysts draws from interviews with twelve Jungian analysts, focusing on four categories of Jungian thought: pathways to becoming a Jungian analyst and stories about Jung; the two Jungian concepts of shadow and typology; attitudes toward spirituality and religion; and the impact of Jungian thought upon culture. The article’s introduction gives the history of how the authors came to write the book, along with comments on their style and approach. Some analysts interviewed knew Jung personally; others are from second and subsequent generations. The discussion of topics presents the range of views. On the shadow, for example, Adolph Guggenbühl-Craig’s view of the “suicidal maniac and murderer in us” is presented along with other views that stress how the shadow enhances individuation. In terms of spirituality and religion, attitudes move between the two concepts, and in regards to culture, sexuality and the cultural unconscious are explored.
