Abstract
ABSTRACT This essay argues that recent reevaluations of the 1960s popular music canon and the Beatles’ catalog therein reflect changes in the cultural priorities of twenty-first-century America. These changes are demonstrated by an examination of various lists of “greatest” or “best” albums by popular music publications, with particular emphasis on a 2017 list of “The 200 Best Albums of the 1960s” by online magazine Pitchfork. By ranking The Beatles (popularly called the “White Album”) ahead of all other albums by the Beatles Pitchfork’s list diverges from previous renderings of the sixties rock canon to reflect new social, political, and cultural priorities.
