Abstract

This article highlights the men and women at two separate water utilities who have been presented with AWWA's Heroism Award for their extraordinary efforts during emergency situations. The water department crew at Padre Dam Municipal Water District in San Diego, California, worked for more than two days protecting the lives and property of local residents during the massive wildfires in October 2003; and, staff at the city of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Water and Sewer Utilities saved the life of co‐worker Robert Sumeracki who collapsed at work from ventricular fibrillation.
