magic of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Gogol, Turgenev, and Solzhenitsyn, and I feel that reading Russian literature is a unique experience not to be duplicated in the writings of any other national group. The English instructor who reads no foreign literature smisses much, I am sure, through such narrow-mindedness. There would be many advantages to, including selections of Russian literature in the high school literature program, but one of the main problems has been the length and difficulty of many of the better known works. War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Brothers Karamazov, and Crime and Punishment might create a bulge in many programs because of their length and difficulty. Fathers and Sons might be too difficult to handle at many levels. Usually all that is included are a few lesser known works of Tolstoy or a few of Chekhov's short stories.
