Abstract
What can we use in Goffman? Despite his accessible prose, it is difficult for social theorists and researchers to appropriate Goffman. His concern with such mundane matters as lying, play-acting, sport, joking and games means that he slips through the carefully constructed categories of sociological self-appraisal. This is all the more frustrating because what Goffman studies is well known. In the most general terms the domain of Goffman's analyses is social interaction:
