Abstract

Goethe's correspondence, the diaries and the coeval sources reveal that his literary clubs occupied a position of prominence among his hobbies. Goethe was the founder of several of these clubs which were designed to provide entertainment and education for the Weimar court and its retinue,. The Friday Evening Club was undoubtedly the foremost organization sponsored by him. Reference to it is made in Goethe's letter of July 1, 1794, to Duke Karl August in these words:
