Abstract
After sporadic, single reappearances of trills and tremolos in the melodic line, the exceptional conjunction of two trills brings to the end of the passage a poignant and dramatic release. Whether or not that event reflects a happy encounter in the unravelling of serial adjacencies, a conscious or intuitive artistic decision in what may be an entirely free compositional practice, or a voluntary manipulation of serially delimited alternatives-three of the coinages current internationally today-we respond with pleasure to an inspired or fortuitous moment.
