Abstract
It is common in histories of scholarship to discern a major turning point in the modern study of Old Testament Theology in an article by Rudolf Kittel published in 1921 under the title Die Zukunft der alttestamentlichen Wissenschaft. This chapter focuses on a terminological and linguistic issue which has some important implications for Old Testament Theology as well as the history of Israelite religion. It is strange that it has attracted so little interest. There are numerous studies of the origin and significance of the name Yahweh, and theologies of the Old Testament frequently contain a chapter or more than one on the subject. Historically speaking, the use of the words for God in the Old Testament also has a wide range.
