Abstract

ABSTRACT It is said that community policing is transforming police organizations and officer behaviors. Community police officers, moreover, may differ from other officers in wajs that necessitate new management strategies. Specifically, do community police officers differ from traditional police officers in their motivations, goals, and receptiveness to direction from management? This study examined whether community police officers hold different goals and values from their chief compared to officers assigned to traditional duties. The analysis indicated that goal congruity was not a unidimensional concept, but that it consisted of congruity in the areas, of public relations and job structure. While community police officers did not differ from patrol officers in terms of goal congruity, the departmental environment and officers’ tenure did predict goal congruity.
