COAGULOPATHY IS A CONCERN in cardiac surgery that involves cardiopulmonary bypass as it leads to an increased risk of perioperative bleeding and transfusion. Recent advances in coagulation monitoring using point-of-care (POC) devices, and new hemostatic agents have increased interest in using a goal-directed approach to treat coagulopathy. The availability of POC devices in the perioperative setting allows coagulopathy to be assessed using rapid bedside tests. This allows physicians to adopt a goal-directed approach to targeted therapy according to the underlying hemostatic pathology.
