Abstract

A hob cutter with helix gashes is a common design concept for worm gear cutters and cutters with large lead angles. Improper grinding of the cutting face can however cause lead and profile errors. The generation mechanism for pencil-type grinding wheel and hob cutter with helix gashes can be designed considering the following motions : (1) The hob cutter performs a screw motion, and (2) The grinding wheel rotates about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the screw motion. In this paper, a mathematical model of the cutting face for the hob cutter is developed and the profiles of a pencil-type grinding wheel used to grind the cutting face are investigated by the theory of gearing. Also presented in this paper are computer generated graphics of the grinding wheel. It is anticipated that the results obtained from this research are beneficial to the design and manufacture of high precision hob cutters with helix gashes.
