Abstract
1. 1. HPLC was used to show that sandflies ( Phlebotomus papatasi), fed various sugars, hydrolyze tri- and disaccharides to monosaccharides and convert some dietary monosaccharides to oligosaccharides. 2. 2. Similar glycosidic activity can be demonstrated by mixing sugars and fly homogenates in vitro and analyzing the solutions after incubation. 3. 3. The distribution of activity in the flies indicates that the glycosidases are salivary gland products. 4. 4. The flies are probably capable of metabolizing all the oligosaccharides present in their natural sugarmeals.
