Nevertheless, novel therapeutic approaches are under development. Our study evaluate the GFD impact as perceived by parents of CD children and their demand for alternative therapies. Methods: Parents of CD children were asked to fill a questionnaire investigating compliance and personal judgment on GFD, health status (HS) and quality of life (QOL), necessity and preference for novel therapies, eventual enrollment of their children in clinical trials. Results: 116 questionnairewere collected. GFD compliancewas 97.4% and was considered positively by 93.8% of the parents. HS and QOL significantly improved on GFD (p 10 ULN, EMA) could be diagnosed with CD omitting the duodenal biopsy. Considering that the average cost of performing an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with duodenal biopsy is 284 Euro per patient, the new ESPGHAN protocol could have reduced our health care costs by 34.932 Euro over a 3 year period. Conclusions: We estimate that applying the new ESPGHAN criteria, almost50%of thechildrendiagnosedwithCD inourdepartment every year could receive the diagnosis without performing a duodenal biopsy and therefore eliminating possible risk related to this invasive procedure and drastically reducing health care costs. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.dld.2014.07.117
