Abstract

SummaryThe genotypes of 143 apple cultivars, selections and rootstocks involving three loci GOT-1, GOT-2 and GOT-4 and eleven alleles for glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (E.C.2.6.1.1; GOT) were recorded, sufficient to group the 61 cultivars, 45 selections and 37 rootstocks into 74 distinct phenotypic classes. The presence of three different allelic bands or variations in intensity of bands in triploids facilitated the identification of the parent contributing the 2n component. The examination of allelic frequencies showed that, of the GOT-2 alleles, b predominated; the possible selective advantage of this allele and its use in a breeding programme is discussed.
