Abstract

A generalization of the Friedberg-Lee model, which minimally incorporates soft confinement of quarks and gluons and approximate chiral symmetry, is presented and applied to the computation of the gluonic contribution to the nucleon-delta mass difference. The value of the effective strong fine structure constant is estimated to be αs= 0.65.
