Abstract

General arguments are given for the confinement of transverse gauge field excitations in asymptotically free theories with a restricted number of matter fields. The arguments are based upon exact results concerning the structure of gauge field propagators, together with the definition of a physical subspace using the Becchi-Rouet-Stora algebra.
