Abstract

We diagonalize a non-relativistic hamiltonian in a locally gauge invariant basis for colour singlet q q and qqq states in the physical vacuum |Ω〉. In this basis the gluon condensate confines quarks by harmonic forces. The oscillator constant is for mesons ω M =(π/3m)〈Ω|(α/π)G 2|Ω〉 and for baryons ω B =√ 5 8 ω M . For a quark mass of 330 MeV they reproduce the ϱ′−ϱ mass splitting and the baryon size.
