Abstract
Abstract Cut flowers of Protea cv. Sylvia show severe leaf blackening. Sucrose pulsing and sucrose in holding solutions did not alleviate this problem, and sometimes even promoted leaf blackening. Sucrose concentrations in untreated leaves and flowers increased early on during vase life, followed by a decrease, while glucose and fructose concentrations decreased both in leaves and flowers. Inclusion of 2.5% glucose in the vase water of ‘Sylvia’ proteas increased vase life from 6 days (control) to 20 days.
