Abstract
Intravenous glucose-tolerance tests were done on fourteen newborn babies who had not been fed or who had been able to absorb only small amounts of milk, and who were undergoing surgery for abnormalities of the alimentary tract. In six of these babies the disappearance-rate of glucose was abnormally low and tended to be independent of concentration, but it was not correlated with duration of starvation, free-fatty-acid levels, or operative trauma. The prolonged use of parenteral glucose infusions in such cases could lead to severe hyperglycæmia; the rate of such infusions should be adjusted to the capacity of the baby to handle glucose.
