Abstract

Gloves appear to have been known among civilised peoples for a very long time and reference to both leather and linen gloves has been found in Egyptian tombs. Early use of gloves was mostly ceremonial, such as silk gloves for the regalia of early Christian Bishops. First real use of gloves for dress purposes in England was in Elizabethan times, when they were produced with highly ornamented cuffs and must have been very expensive.
