Abstract

Abstract Glottalized consonants are known to be a strong areal feature of Southeast Asia/south China. In this paper, adopting a definition of glottalized consonants in the strict sense as unit phonemes, not clusters, and incorporating both synchronic and diachronic data that have become available since the classic articles by Haudricourt and Henderson, I find that: 1. Glottalized consonants are a strong genetic feature of Kadai, Miao-Yao and Mon-Khmer, but not Sino-Tibetan.
