Abstract

Effects of the initial atomic orientation on the total cross section α were measured for Ga—rare-gas collisions by using magnetically state-selected and oriented Ga( 2P 3/2 atoms. The orientation effect Δσ/σ was found to be several percent in magnitude. Orientation-dependent glory phenomena were clearly observed. The measured effects are analyzed in terms of a pair of potentials for the Ω = 3/2 and 1/2 states of the quasi-molecule.
