Abstract

Glomerulopathies are a group of diseases that primarily affect the glomeruli, leading to loss of the filtration barrier and on many occasions a deterioration in renal function. Its causes can be highly diverse and lead to wide ranging clinical syndromes depending on the degree to which the filtration capacity is affected. The principal syndromes are nephrotic, nephritic, urinary sediment abnormality, acute kidney failure, and chronic kidney disease. On occasion, a diagnosis can be made based on specific analytical findings, but in most cases, a renal biopsy establishes the definitive diagnosis, which is also essential for determining a prognosis. Finally, treatment will depend on the specific disease as well as the degree of activity and chronicity on the renal biopsy.
