Abstract

1. 1. The renal glomerular capillaries of nine species of northern mammals were studied electron microscopically. 2. 2. The basement membrane of the hibernating Arctic ground squirrel average 4200 Å in width, which was twice the wisth of that found in the control. 3. 3. A central dense lamina was found in all species but was of greatest density in the black bear. 4. 4. Diaphragms at the podocytic slit-widths were found in all species except the harbor seal. 5. 5. The plasma membrane of the epithelial cells in all species showed an extracellular polysaccharide coat.
